A beauty industry without plastic seems like a impossible feat to achieve, but L’Oreal USA is up for the challenge. After launching its L’Oréal for the Future sustainability program in June 2020, the beauty behemoth is taking its efforts a step further by joining the U.S. Plastics Pact with countless other brands and organizations.

The U.S. Plastics Pact is an initiative that was launched under the collaborative team of The Recycling Partnership and World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and is also a part of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s global Plastics Pact network. The program aims to unify organizations, brands, policyholders, plastic packing producers, and more to work towards creating a better, more circular economy.

According to the press release, by joining the U.S. Plastics Pact, L’Oreal is making a commitment to deliver on four different plans:

1. Define a list of packaging to be designated as problematic or unnecessary by 2021 and take measures to eliminate them by 2025.

2. By 2025, all plastic packaging is 100% reusable, recyclable, or compostable.

3. By 2025, undertake ambitious actions to effectively recycle or compost 50% of plastic packaging.

4. By 2025, the average recycled content or responsibly sourced bio-based content in plastic packaging will be 30%.

“L’Oréal is committed to doing our part to protect the planet from the global climate crisis we are facing, and we are transforming our business to do so,” Danielle Azoulay, head of CSR and sustainability, L’Oréal USA, said in a statement. “We know that the impact of our global sustainability commitment, L’Oréal for the Future, will reach its full potential through collaboration—across our entire value chain, our industry and beyond it. We are proud to be part of the U.S. Plastics Pact and join over 60 organizations in working together toward system-wide change toward a circular economy for plastic in the United States.”

L’Oreal’s new move fits hand-in-hand with its recently launched sustainability program “L’Oréal for the Future,” an ambitious program designed to help the company “respect the planet’s limits” with plans to complete the mission by 2030.
